Duality, 2015, 15”x5”x2.25” (Optical Field Series)
(RGB leds, acrylic light pipe, translucent acrylic diffusers, custom dual electronic light control, custom software, acrylic enclosure)

The color of a central linear light pipe morphs in opposition to the diffuse color generated on the translucent surface of the acrylic enclosure. There are five color modes that can be addressed to change the part of the visible spectrum treated. The viewer experiences ever-changing subtle color contrasts between the light pipe and the background which slowly morph over time and never repeat.

Complement, 2014, 16”x6”x3” (Optical Field Series)
(red and blue 3mm neon tubes, translucent acrylic, neon supply, acrylic enclosure)

In this display intense thin red and blue neon lights float behind thin slits in a translucent acrylic sheet where color mixing and intensity vary over the extent of the sheet. The viewer experience varies depending on the angle of view and the distance from the display.

Tranquility, 2015 12”x6”x3.5” (Optical Field Series)
(3mm neon, RGB leds, custom electronic controller, custom software, translucent acrylic diffuser, acrylic enclosure)

An internally illuminated, nested rectangular assembly combines an illuminated neon panel with a rear illumined translucent enclosure, presenting constantly changing color and color mixing phenomena on its front facing surfaces. The illumination within the enclosure slowly color morphs over the visual spectrum causing changes in hue over time on both front facing surfaces of the display.

Color Field 3, 2014 18.5”x8”x4” (Optical Field Series)
(3 mm neon, RGB leds, custom electronic controller, custom software, neon tube, translucent acrylic diffusers, acrylic enclosure)

An internally illuminated, nested rectangular assembly presents color and color mixing phenomena on its front and side surfaces. Five addressable color changing sequences range over different portions of the visual spectrum and fade and morph from one color to the next at very slow varying rates. A neon tube illuminates a slit in the front rectangular assembly and diffusely illuminates its raised front and side surfaces. The viewer experiences an intense central color-mixed field surrounded by a visual frame of solid, almost imperceptibly changing color.
Meditation Light, 2016 7”x6”x1.5” (Optical Field Series)
Meditation Light, 2016 7”x6”x1.5” (Optical Field Series)
(dispersive acrylic plate, RGB led light strip, custom electronic controller, custom software, touch pad, power supply, milled/stained oak, acrylic)

In this kinetic light a seemingly transparent acrylic plate appears to “breathe” by changing brightness according to several timed meditation breathing schemes. Different muted colors including warm white, cool white, light blue, and peach are selectable via a touch pad. Viewer focus is enhanced by requiring the viewer to watch the screen without being distracted by the background.

Half Moon Light, 2016 7.25”x5”x2.5” (Optical Field Series)
(dispersive acrylic plate, RGB led light strip, custom electronic controller, custom software, touch pad, power supply, milled/stained oak, acrylic)

In this kinetic light an apparently transparent half-moon shape in acrylic becomes a screen where color and intensity vary according to several addressable sequences.
Suspended Cylinder Light, 2016 7.25”x4.4”x2” (Optical Field Series)
Suspended Cylinder Light, 2016 7.25”x4.4”x2” (Optical Field Series)
(dispersive acrylic plate, translucent acrylic tube, RGB led light strip, custom electronic controller, custom software, touch pad, power supply, milled/stained oak, acrylic)

A translucent cylinder is suspended above a wooden base supported by a transparent acrylic plate. The plate acts as a light pipe thereby illuminating the suspended cylinder with selectable dynamically changing color palettes.
Optical Field Studies

The first four pieces in this series of kinetic light works were begun in 2013. The inspiration for the series came when I revisited experimental videos I created in 1990 to investigate moment-to-moment awareness of slightly changing environmental phenomena. The colors and color contrasts in three of these works slowly evolve over long periods of time lending themselves to meditation practice. The fourth, "Complement" visually investigates static color mixing. The next three works deal with timed morphing of color and brightness in different color schemes to influence the viewer's emotional state.
