This particular tromp l'oeil fountain incorporates three seamlessly repeating soundscapes with adjustable volume. Electronics and speaker system are integral to the fountain so the sound appears to emanate directly from the water instead of from a separate source.
In 2016 I recorded this soundscape at a stream near Rock Creek Lake in the High Sierra where my brother and I camped as teenagers. I purposely designed the fountain to have almost inaudible sound so that the soundscape and the fountain's water movement did not appear contradictory. Listening to the fountain brings back memories not only of my brother but also of the many times I hiked and backpacked in the area. Sound alone would not have had the same impact. Generating a soundscape of this complexity would be difficult if not impossible to produce in a small fountain where water is used to generate the acoustics.
